The Boston Celtics will be without Jayson Tatum in the most important game of their season, with the All-Star forward ruled out for Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers after exiting Game 6 in the third quarter. His absence removes Boston’s primary offensive focal point after averaging 23.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in the series . Boston led the series 3–1 before dropping Games 5 and 6, including a 106–93 loss in Philadelphia where the Sixers controlled tempo and shot quality. The winner advances to face the New York Knicks.

Game 7 now centers on Jaylen Brown, and more importantly, on what Boston has already done this season without Tatum. Tatum played a limited portion of the year, and Brown carried the Celtics through that stretch, putting together career-best numbers with 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while leading Boston to the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Brown is the very reason Boston is still in this position, and it defines how they approach this final game.

Brown’s production in this series has remained steady despite Boston’s offensive decline, averaging 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists through six games while shooting 45.9% from the field and 34.1% from three. He scored 36 points in Game 2 and has consistently been Boston’s most reliable scorer across the series. The difference now is that his role expands, with no second option at the same level.

Philadelphia enters with momentum built over the last two games and a clear offensive structure. Tyrese Maxey has dictated pace, including a 30-point performance in Game 6, while Joel Embiid has controlled the interior with scoring and playmaking. Paul George has provided consistent secondary production, adding 23 points in Game 6 and averaging strong numbers across the series, giving Philadelphia a reliable perimeter option alongside Maxey . The supporting cast has been just as important, with Kelly Oubre Jr. impacting both ends and rookie VJ Edgecombe contributing in transition and scoring 14 points in Game 6.

How Philadelphia can win

Philadelphia’s path is built on continuing the structure that has already flipped the series. Maxey’s ability to control tempo and create early offense forces Boston into rotation, while Embiid’s presence inside draws defensive attention and opens space for perimeter scorers. If Paul George maintains his efficiency and Oubre and Edgecombe continue to provide complementary scoring, Philadelphia can win control of Game 7.

How Boston can win

Boston can bank on what it has already proven to work over the course of the season, which is operating with Jaylen Brown as the clear first option. Brown must match his series production while maintaining efficiency under more pressure, but the outcome depends on the supporting cast. The Celtics need improved three-point shooting, along with increased shot volume from players like Payton Pritchard. Interior production from Nikola Vučević must limit Philadelphia’s control of the paint, while Derrick White, Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta, Baylor Scheierman, Luka Garza and Jared Walsh must provide consistent minutes to support both spacing and defense.

Boston has already shown it can function without Tatum, and that reality defines Game 7 more than the injury itself. The difference is the moment, facing elimination against a white-hot Sixers team that has found rhythm with its back against the wall.
